The basic task of Picture Archiving and Communications Systems (PACS) is to realize and support digital picture formation, handling and the connected data control with its all aspect in hospitals. That means:

• Receiving DICOM and non- DICOM format pictures and moving pictures across DICOM protocoll.
• Controll and safe storage of the received pictures.
• Distribution of the pictures and the related diagnostical informations to client applications.
• Propagating the stored pictures (and related data) to other systems.
• Hardcopy archiving the amount of data (pictures and information) so that it can be brought into online condition easily and quickly.
• Protection of stored data against accidental and penetrating activities.
• Restoring from archive in case of data damage. 
• Printing.
